Do we say “cacahuate” or “cacahuete”?

The “cacahuate” is a plant native to South America, probably Peru. Although Europeans saw it for the first time in an Aztec market, its name in Nahuatl was “tlalcacacahuatl”. In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries it is called “cacahuate”, while in some places, such as the West Indies, it is called “maní”.

In Spain it is called “cacahuete“, due to the evolution of the Nahuatl language into Spanish, where “tl” became “te”. Both words, “cacahuate” and “cacahuete”, are correct.
